NOT GETTING JOB INTERVIEWS? IT MAY BE YOUR RESUME – AND COVER LETTER
By Joe Connor
Resume Writer & Marketing Consultant
Are you a talented, yet frustrated job seeker because you are not getting called for interviews? If so, there are three reasons for this unfortunate reality:
- You don’t meet the job qualifications – but, you’re smart, so you only apply for jobs you are qualified for and you should be getting called for interviews;
- Blame the economy – it could be this reason, but it’s never the season in life to complain about what you can’t control (no one wants to hear it);
- It’s your resume – perhaps this is the No. 1 reason your phone isn’t ringing?
My name is Joe Connor and for more than 10 years I’ve helped job seekers improve their chances of securing a job because I improve their resumes and covers letters to the point where it results in interviews. I have many satisfied clients that have seen immediate results thanks to my work and I have plenty of testimonials to boot to prove it. In addition to expert resume and cover letter writing, my other areas of expertise include career assessment; interview preparation; time-saving job research techniques; and compensation negotiations.
Bottom line: you can’t get a good job without an interview – and you can’t get an interview with a great resume and cover letter.
Yes, cover letter. Don’t forget in today’s electronic/Internet age, every email you “click send” for a job must include a cover letter in the body copy to stand out from the crowd, especially when the employer doesn’t ask for it.
And just how do you stand from the crowd? How do you convince a recruiter or hiring manager to put you in the “interview pile” when you have equal qualifications to as many, if not hundreds, of other candidates?
The only way to effectively do so is with the quality of your presentation.
By far the biggest mistake most job seekers make is at the top of their resume. Instead of selling the recruiter or hiring manager on their qualifications by listing related accomplishments to the position they’re applying for, it never seeks to amaze how most job seekers write a meaningless one or two sentence objective!
Objective? You’re objective is to get a job!
You’ve got 10 seconds or less to make your sales pitch, which is why the most important element of a resume is the qualifications at the top – not an objective. And not just why you are qualified for the position! Remember, they’re probably only hiring one job candidate and they’ve received, say, 50 to 200 resumes. How many of those do you think they’ll interview – five or six candidates? So, what your really MUST do is quickly and effectively communicate what makes your qualifications BETTER than other candidates.
Focus on your qualifications atop the resume and you’ll put yourself ahead of the class. And if writing and marketing is not your area of expertise, I encourage you to contact me for a free consultation because the ultimate measurement of a successful resume is whether or not your phone is ringing.
